Vagus Nerve Stimulation Study Reveals Possible Treatment for Addiction

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is a non-invasive treatment for those suffering from addiction. The procedure is approved in the U.S. as a safe and effective treatment. According to a study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery, VNS is extremely effective for up to five years, after which it ceases to work due to the patient developing tolerance to the drug used.

A neurostimulation research team headed by Dr. Daniel R. Steinhardt at Duke University Medical Center presented a study on this popular treatment. The eight-month study reported that 15 patients suffering from addiction used the VNS during the study. Each participant in the study took the following medication:

Alprazolam (Alprazolam, Diazepam)

Fentanyl (Fentanyl, Hylazone)

Temazepam (Temazepam)

Carbamazepine (Carbidopa, Levadopa)

Diazepam (Valium, Valium 75)

Effexor XR (Effexor, Effexor 75)

Nordiazepam (Nordiazepam, Valium 25mg)

Nalmefene (Nalmefene, Narax, Paroxetine)

The total cost of the eight-month study was $38,244. The cost for the accompanying medication for each patient was $1,190 (Alprazolam) to $6,763 (Valium), and between $450 and $2000 (Temazepam), depending on what dosage was given. Doctors estimated that these medication costs went down slightly with each patient’s previous history. The participants were excluded from all kinds of outside research after receiving treatment.

The patients were in recovery after 12, 24 and 36 months. By the time the end of the study was reached, the patients had between three and four months of free-recovery treatment from the VNS. Each participant received one device and one device upon initiation, and every seven to eight months, they received a new device.

Since the drug used was either amphetamine (ADLS) or heroin (PCP), researchers observed that an average level of heroin, barbiturate, valium and diazepam was found in the brains of the participants in all of the eight months.

The authors wrote, “Patients were monitored for adverse effects such as dizziness, fatigue, depression, agitation, and headaches, and the subjects exhibited no adverse effects.”

There was a low rate of serious side effects during the course of the study, with 62.3 percent of the participants returning to successful treatment with Vagus Nerve Stimulation within seven to eight weeks.

Besides the non-invasive procedure, the VNS works to help the patient recover from their addiction. It increases the release of dopamine in the brain in an attempt to “recover” the addiction using the same medium that led to the addiction: the desire for drug.

According to a study published in the journal Addiction: “Vagus Nerve Stimulation may play a different role than the goal-oriented reward from the drugs.” The study stated that “VNS can help the addicted person break the dependency by bringing her and her brain back to [an] old normal functioning.”

According to a report published by Yale News, these findings may make it easier for people suffering from addiction to get a happy and healthy life. “It can increase the feelings of connection, encouragement, and pleasure derived from those we associate with through motivational think, such as friends and family.”

Vagus Nerve Stimulation is still not mainstream, but if the treatment works as reported in the study, and is tolerated by the patient, it could lead to much positive results.
