The ancient Indian ancient mystic philosophy is called yoga which came from the Sanskrit word, yogam from the first English words, for “to lift up”. Yoga embraces movement and exercises, meditation and breathing, all within the Indian tradition. As the tradition of yoga has been practised for centuries, it is often used as an excuse and a shortcut by many to live in some kind of stress-free mode. But this culture of yoga seems to have been instigated only by Indians and by the Western commercial world only. In Western culture, there is nothing about yoga except the catwalk of dance steps in the usual yoga studios but yoga has no meaning to those who practice it.
Nonsense is like the bonfire and it is fascinating to follow the story. The Indian Foundation for Yoga was founded in 1942 and it was able to establish its presence in London, Nairobi, US, and soon there were hundreds of YOGIS around the world. The foundation established the first yoga school in India in 1925 with Dr. Bharat Preet Khatri and Dr. Pranoy Roy, of the Indian Medical Association, Bangalore. After some time, a society based on Yoga was formed in England and the first Yoga Foundation in England is based in London. One Hundred years later, in 1994, a Yoga Foundation was established in Fiji, an act of Governmental support to this traditional Indian religion. It brought many yogis from around the world to Fiji, and yoga was finally legalised in Fiji in 1994.
Let’s review here the differences between traditional and modern Yoga. Of course, there are also some obvious similarities such as Yoga which is asanas are thought to relieve stress. But of course, the concept of doing yoga alone is always interpreted with a stress-reduction value by Yoga teachers.
Modern Yoga (or, Professional Yoga in USA) is all about providing the opportunity for physical well-being. According to these yoga practitioners, people can make their energy level jump based on this type of breath. The very Indian idea of the ancient yoga which is traditional or ancient Indian Yoga is that the way one learns yoga is that it is a continuous process. No one pushes you, push back, help you. In modern Yoga, it is a constant process. The physical benefit is, so to speak, usually optional.
The main difference between traditional and modern yoga is that traditional yoga does not have any technique for practice. Modern Yoga’s emphasis is upon technical ability to execute in a way which follows a system of gestures.
Modern Yoga teaches highly complex techniques which is introduced in Yoga. Yoga has become too much of a computer program. Now there are HAPPY yoga and PURE yoga and everything in between. Traditional Yoga is flexible and adaptable, but modern Yoga is rigid.
Modern Yoga is teaching the facts and tricks which are usually practiced in the modern schools of psychology. Modern Yoga often introduces the act of smiling or frowning. Yoga presents such complex concept of breathing and stretching etc. that it is very difficult to learn something effective.
Traditional Yoga is always been a spiritual practice. It is not about exercise. Traditional Yoga is always claimed as the path to peace. Modern Yoga does not accept this, yet, it is very good at inducing relaxation and relaxation of one’s anxiety level.
Asanas are mainly for the mind. Modern Yoga promotes the concept of Self-Absorption in the exercise as a means of self-satisfaction, therefore, these asanas are applied mainly as a stimulus to the relaxation of the anxious mind. Yoga really claims that “Yoga increases self-esteem and self-confidence, self-control, self-assurance and then develops the mind into an alert, disciplined, positive mind.” Modern Yoga claims its games are regulated by thousands of science-based exercises, hence, very effective.
Modern Yoga has become very fast. It has become the only method that one can learn in the Western style.
Yoga today is becoming more popular. Even young children today are learning Yoga. Its branches and methods are different but it does have a certain direction. It does not change the tradition of yoga, but it takes more of the past and more of the present. Modern Yoga has separated its teachings and methodology from the traditional yoga.
In this modern yoga people can become better at just expressing themselves through Yoga. The dangerous thing in modern Yoga is that people are becoming more secular in their perception. When we see yoga as a way to “do things in comfort”, we no longer follow its original traditions. In modern Yoga we must be very careful of the metaphysical orientation of yogas.
